BSI to Obtain Change Layer Patent

Mill Valley, CA:  Boundary Solutions, Inc. is pleased to report that it recently received a Notice of Allowance from the US Patent and Trademark Office for its patent application to the “Change Layer”, the patent to publish in a few months.

To produce the change layer, the most recently released parcel map overlay is spatially compared to the previous parcel map overlay. The following parcel polygons in the new parcel map are identified and copied to a new overlay containing only all parcel boundaries:

  • Created due to splitting/subdividing an existing parcel.
  • Modified due to a size and/or boundary adjustment.
  • Created when two or more parcels are joined into a single parcel.

This technique includes software that expedites the updating of the current database with all changes through a parcel merge procedure.

The advantages of change layer include:

  • More convenient archiving of multiple years of changes made to a parcel map.
  • Elimination of massive uploads and downloads needed in current procedures.
  • The ability to work backwards to observe changes over time, a boon to title dispute assessment wherein only the last couple of years of change is available.
